The Forbes Five: Hip-Hop's Wealthiest Artists 2013

Sean “Diddy” Combs rose to mainstream fame in the late 1990s rapping about his desire for Benjamins, otherwise known as $100 bills. A decade and a half later, he might need to consider some larger denominations—McKinleys, Clevelands and Madisons, perhaps—to express his wealth.

1. Diddy ranks No. 1 on this year’s Forbes Five, with an estimated net worth of $580 million. The bulk of the Bad Boy Records founder’s wealth comes from non-musical ventures, namely his deal with Diageo’s Ciroc. The agreement entitles him to eight-figure annual payouts and a nine-figure windfall if the brand is ever sold—and Ciroc’s value has never been higher.
2. The No. 2 spot goes to Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, with a net worth of $475 million. He’s still rolling in cash from megadeals like his $204 million Rocawear sale in 2007 and his $150 million pact with Live Nation the following year. He continues to hold stakes in Roc Nation, Carol’s Daughter, the Brooklyn Nets—and, more significantly, the Barclays Center itself—while adding new partnerships with the likes of Duracell, Budweiser and Bacardi’s D’ussé Cognac.
3. Andre “Dr. Dre” Young ranks third with $350 million, thanks mostly to his Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. A year after selling 51% of the company to handset maker HTC for $300 million in August 2011, Dre and his partners bought back half of the half they sold in 2012—and their investment continues to soar in value due to Beats’ whopping 65% market share of the premium ($99 and up) headphone market.
4. Bryan “Birdman” Williams owns the No. 4 spot, riding his Cash Money/Young Money empire to a fortune of $150 million. His roster includes Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne (the latter crossed the $100 million threshold for the first time this year, by our estimates, but remains just outside the top five). Birdman also recently launched a YMCMB clothing line and a spirit called GT Vodka.
5. Rounding out the list is Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson at $125 million. He’s another master of brand building: The bulk of his fortune came from heavy sales of his music, merchandise, video games and books in the wake of his smash debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’—and particularly from his payout for the sale of his stake in VitaminWater parent Glacéau to Coca-Cola in 2007.

Mandela 'responding positively' to treatment in hospital

Former South African President Nelson Mandela is "responding positively" to treatment after he was readmitted to a hospital overnight for a recurring lung infection. President Jacob Zuma's office passed along the doctors' assessment of the ailing Mandela, the 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon and nation's first black president.

Mandela was conscious when he was taken to the hospital just before midnight Wednesday, Zuma's office said. It's the second time this month he has been hospitalized. More than two weeks ago, he was taken to a hospital for what officials described as a routine checkup.

Mandela has become increasingly frail over the years, and has not appeared in public since South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010. They have appealed to the people of South Africa and the world to pray for the beloved Madiba and his family, and to keep them in their thoughts."

Considered the founding father of South Africa's democracy, Mandela became an international figure when he endured 27 years in prison for fighting apartheid, the country's system of racial segregation. In 1993, he and then-South African President F.W. de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela was elected president a year later, serving only one term, as he had promised.

Despite only rare public appearances in recent years, he retains his popularity and is considered a hero of democracy in the nation. Last year, South Africa launched a new batch of banknotes with a picture of a smiling Mandela on the front, a testament to his iconic status. Mandela's impact extends far beyond South African borders. After he left office, he was involved in mediating conflicts from Africa to the Middle East.

Pope Francis shuns luxury Papal apartment, stays in simple 2-room Suite.

Pope Francis has decided not to move into the papal apartment used by Benedict XVI and others before him, preferring instead to stay in a simple suite at a Vatican hotel, a Vatican spokesman said. The papal apartment on the top floor of the Apostolic Palace is ready for the new pontiff to move into, however, he has decided to stay at the Casa Santa Marta, the residence where he's been staying since the papal election two weeks ago, for the time being.

His presence at Casa Santa Marta, the residence near St. Peter's Basilica where all the cardinals stayed during the conclave, means Francis will continue to meet his fellow priests for Mass and other communal activities. Although he's not moved in to the apartment, Francis is using the Apostolic Palace, including offices in his papal apartments, to carry out his papal duties, such as holding meetings and audiences.

Francis, the first Jesuit to assume the papacy, has become widely known for his embrace of simplicity and humility since he became pope. He's spoken of his desire to see the Roman Catholic Church be a "poor church, for the poor," and his sermons have focused on the need to look after the needy and sick, as well as the natural world.

The pope's decision to remain in Casa Santa Marta, at least for now, is in keeping with his track record. While serving as archbishop in Buenos Aires, he declined to live in the archbishop's palace, choosing instead to live in a simple apartment. He also passed on a chauffeured limousine, preferring to take the bus with ordinary people, and he cooked his own meals. He's also bringing this approach to the events of Holy Week, leading up to Easter.

BlackBerry makes makes $94 million on revenue of $2.7 billion, ships 1 million BB10 devices in 2013 Q4

This isn't quite the BlackBerry earnings story you're waiting for -- after all, the US figures covering the success (or otherwise) of the Z10 won't arrive until the next quarter. Instead, we're looking at the company's results from the end of the fiscal year to March 2nd, which shows that the smartphone maker made $94 million income on revenues of $2.7 billion -- in contrast with the $125 million net loss it made in the same quarter last year. More importantly, however, it shipped out almost one million BlackBerry 10 devices during the three weeks of the quarter that they were available. In addition, it managed to push five million of its older smartphones and 370,000 PlayBook tablets out of the door, but saw user numbers fall from 79 million last quarter to 76 million now.
As revenue has remained relatively flat, the surge in profits can only be attributed to Thorstein Heins' aggressive cost-cutting measures, with the CEO remarking that the "numerous changes" he has implemented at the company has "resulted in [BlackBerry] returning to profitability." At the same time, Mike Lazaridis has announced that he'll retire from his position as vice-chair and director of the outfit he founded the better part of three decades ago. He'll exit the business on May 1st so that he can concentrate on his new enterprise, Quantum Valley Investments.

Awolowo, Tribune publisher, dies at 70

Publisher, African Newspapers of Nigeria Plc, the publishers of the Tribune newspapers, Chief Oluwole Awolowo, died in a United Kingdom hospital yesterday at the age of 70.
A statement from ANN Plc yesterday said Oluwole, a son of the late Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, died as a result of the complications he suffered in a car crash about seven years ago.
The statement by the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the company, Mr. Edward Dickson, said, “Chief Awolowo died 5.40pm Nigerian time at Wellington hospital, St Johnswood, London, following complications arising from a car crash that occurred on September 30, 2006. “He had been in and out of hospital, home and abroad, since he was involved in the ghastly accident seven years ago on the Lagos- Ibadan Expressway.
“Despite his health challenges following the accident, Chief Awolowo devoted his life to the service of God and was deeply involved in evangelical activities.”
Many will believe that with his passage, another strong pillar has departed the Awolowo Dynasty. Apart from being the only surviving son of the late sage until his death yesterday, he was a major force in the running of the late politician’s estate.
He had been running the ANN Plc, as the Publisher/Vice-Chairman since 1984. Family sources said Oluwole Awolowo’s tenacity of purpose, which earned him the nickname Únbreakable, given to him by his late father, guided his path till his final days.
At age 12, his independent mind led him into joining the youth wing of the National Council of Nigerian Citizens, the political party led by the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, which was opposed to his father’s Action Group.  But that was not an act of rebellion, but freedom of expression and association which in fact Papa Awolowo admired in his son.
Oluwole, however, won his first elective office in 1975, as a Councillor representing Apapa in the then Lagos City Council.  In 1979, he won a seat into the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Apapa Constituency on the platform of the Unity Party of Nigeria led by the late Awolowo.

Nick D'Aloisio, 17, sells Summly App to Yahoo for $30m!

One of Yahoo’s newest employees is a 17-year-old high school student in Britain. As of Monday, he is one of its richest, too. That student, Nick D’Aloisio, a programming whiz who wasn’t even born when Yahoo was founded in 1994, sold his news-reading app, Summly, to the company on Monday for a sum said to be in the tens of millions of dollars. Yahoo said it would incorporate his algorithmic invention, which takes long-form stories and shortens them for readers using smartphones, in its own mobile apps, with Mr. D’Aloisio’s help.
“I’ve still got a year and a half left at my high school,” he said in a telephone interview on Monday. But he will make arrangements to test out of his classes and work from the Yahoo office in London, partly to abide by the company’s new and much-debated policy that prohibits working from home.
Mr. D’Aloisio, who declined to comment on the price paid by Yahoo (the technology news site AllThingsD pegged the purchase price at about $30 million), was Summly’s largest shareholder.
Summly’s other investors, improbably enough, included Wendi Murdoch, Ashton Kutcher and Yoko Ono. The most important one was Li Ka-shing, the Hong Kong billionaire, whose investment fund supported Mr. D’Aloisio’s idea early on, before it was even called Summly.
“They took a gamble on me when I was a 15-year-old,” Mr. D’Aloisio said, by providing seed financing that let him hire employees and lease office space. The fund read about Mr. D’Aloisio’s early-stage app on TechCrunch, the Silicon Valley blog of record, found his e-mail address and startled him with a message expressing interest.
Summly officially came online last November. By December, Mr. D’Aloisio was talking to Yahoo and other suitors. When not working at Yahoo, he will keep up with his hobbies — cricket in particular — and set his sights on attending college at Oxford. His intended major is philosophy.

BlackBerry 10 reaches the 100,000 App mark, adds Amazon Kindle today

While it's still got some distance to make up, BlackBerry has swiftly reached a milestone of sorts -- its first 100,000 apps. According to the announcement, BB10 has notched up over 30,000 new games and apps over the last seven weeks, all before it's even entered the USA. Notable new additions include the Kindle reader, available today, which Amazon confirmed back in January. There's also apps from The Wall Street Journal and OpenTable, with the promise of eBay, CNN, Rdio, Skype, Viber and more arriving "in the coming weeks."

Twitter is 7 Years Old Today!

They grow up so fast, don't they? When Jack Dorsey was setting up his twttr, even he probably didn't expect the service to be this popular, or that he'd become a household name in the process. After seven years, the social network has 200 million active users, pumping out 400 million tweets per day. To celebrate, the company has put together a short video to take you through how Twitter has influenced the world. You can watch below:

Samsung's Android phones affected by another lockscreen bypass, fix is in the works

Since lockscreen bypass methods are apparently what's hot in the streets, it's no surprise that yet another one has surfaced, this time targeting Samsung's Android phones. A variant of another, earlier uncovered method, this one does not fully unlock the phone by itself, but does provide access to apps and settings for a brief period. Given that, as demonstrated in the video by Terrence Eden, it's possible to use Google Play to download an app to disable the locked screen and fully access the phone.
According to Terrence, this problem is confirmed on the Galaxy Note II, possibly the Galaxy S III and potentially on other TouchWiz UI Samsung Android phones. Disabling screen animations under developer options should reduce the vulnerability, but doesn't eliminate it without switching to another ROM. He also mentions Samsung is aware of the issue and is working on a fix, but that leaves phones accessible right now. We've certainly seen enough of these recently (Apple's latest version of iOS has also been victimized again in the last day) to know leaving our phones out, locked or unlocked, is foolish.

YouTube counts more than a billion unique users each month

What's ten times more popular than the Super Bowl? YouTube, apparently. According to the YouTube blog, more than a billion folks visit the streaming site every month -- and not just views, but unique users. The announcement didn't touch on specifics, but it did provide some fun numbers to put the terrifyingly huge total into context, noting that it would take ten Super Bowl audiences to match its monthly viewership. Almost half of all internet users visit YouTube each month, the team writes, and the numbers would peg the site as the third largest country in the world if traffic numbers could be given statehood. Suddenly, PSY's billion view milestone makes a bit more sense.

Beckham, The World's Best-Paid Footballer

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder David Beckham has topped Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the world's best-paid footballer. France Football magazine has calculated Beckham, 37, will make €36 million this year, one million ahead of Messi, 25, in second and a further five million clear of Ronaldo, 28, in third.
Although the Barcelona and Real Madrid stars' salaries of €12.5 million and €13 million respectively dwarf that of Beckham's, estimated at €1.7 million, it is the Englishman's status as a global marketing icon which earns him some €33 million from advertising and endorsements, that has put him top of the ranking for the sixth time in the last 15 years.
While Ronaldo's Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema, 25, is the highest-ranked French player at 20th with €12 million annually, PSG trio Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 31 (€15 million and eighth globally), Thiago Silva, 28 (€9.6 million), and Ezequiel Lavezzi, 27 (€9.4 million), unsurprisingly occupy the top three places in Ligue 1.
PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti, 53, ranks second among coaches with €12 million annually, €2 million behind Madrid's Jose Mourinho, 50.

Bomb blasts kill 30 at Kano motor park

Monday was  yet another bloody day in Kano as  over 30 passengers, drivers and visitors  lost their lives to explosions at an inter-state  luxury bus park in the city.
Hours before the  blasts, an Islamic militant group, Boko Haram members laid siege to some schools in Maiduguri,  Borno State, killing  four  teachers and injuring several others, including pupils.
The cause of the  Kano explosions which President Goodluck Jonathan described as barbaric, was uncertain as of 8pm on Monday. While some eyewitnesses attributed  it  to improvised explosive devices  planted in a luxury bus in the ever-busy park, others  said  it was  carried out by three suicide bombers.
They were however, in agreement that the explosions also left many injured and  some  buses destroyed in the park located in the Sabon Gari, an area mostly inhabited by non-indigenes. Reuters correspondent at the scene said he counted over 30 bodies that were affected by the explosions which occurred around 4.30pm. But one of the  eyewitnesses put the casualty figure at  more than 60.
Chairman of the Kano chapter of  Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Tobias Idika, said records available to him showed that more than  60 persons died  and  five luxury buses  burnt. “This is the worst experience of  the Igbo in Kano; we have lost over 60 souls, while five buses were burnt to ashes . These show  that we have always been the target of the attacks.
Policemen, operatives of the Joint Task Force and officials of the National Emergency Management Agency who raced to the scene cordoned off the area. They  were seen evacuating  both the dead and injured victims to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Mortuary and hospital  and other facilities  in the city.

Alamieyeseigha Pardon: Bill Gates cancels visit to Nigeria

United States richest man and philanthropist, Bill Gates, has cancelled his planned official visit to Nigeria scheduled for March 27. His action was believed was part of an unfolding diplomatic row between the US and Nigeria following the controversial pardon granted by President Goodluck Jonathan to ex-convicts Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and Shettima Bulama.
He was scheduled to  meet President Goodluck Jonathan, state governors and officials of the Federal Ministry of Health on the polio eradication campaign of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Diplomatic sources said the trip was cancelled, two days after the US government expressed disappointment with the Federal Government for pardoning convicted money launderers.
Gates was reported to have already instructed his staff to inform the Nigerian Presidency, the secretariat of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Federal Ministry of Health that he was no longer coming. “The State Department has advised him that Nigeria is not conducive for such visit at this time,” a source said.  “We hope that the Nigerian government will get the message and return to the path of sanity.”
“We see this as a setback for the fight against corruption, and also for our ability to play the strong role we’ve played in supporting the rule of law and legal institution-building in Nigeria, which is very important for the future of the country obviously,” State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland, had told reporters in Washington.
Gate is the biggest foreign supporter of the campaign to eradicate polio in Nigeria and has worked consistently with the Nigerian authorities since 2009 over the matter. His foundation has developed a six-year strategy through 2018 that will help combat polio in Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan and has set aside $1bn per annum for the purpose.
He had scheduled this March’s visit to consolidate on that alliance, meet with Jonathan, state governors and other stakeholders with a view to generally revving  up the war against the pandemic.

Barca to face PSG in Champions League Quarter Finals

Bitter Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid have been kept apart in the draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Barcelona will be reunited with their former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after being paired against the Swede's current club, Paris Saint-Germain, while Real take on Turkish side Galatasaray. That game will see another reunion as Real coach Jose Mourinho works out how to stop Didier Drogba, the forward who scored so many important goals for him at Chelsea.
Bayern Munich, last season's beaten finalists, will play Italian champions Juventus, while Malaga, in their first Champions League campaign, are pitted against German champions Borussia Dortmund. Juventus are unbeaten in this season's Champions League, as are Dortmund.
In a departure from the convention of previous seasons, the draw for the semi-finals was not made at the same time and will take place next month. Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is aiming to become the first coach ever to win the Champions League with three different clubs, having lifted the trophy with both Porto and Inter Milan.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Official: 5-inch 1080p display, Octa-core Exynos Chip and 13MP Camera

Another year, another Galaxy S flagship smartphone from Samsung. 2013's version of the crown jewel, the Galaxy S4, has just been officially announced at its Unpacked event. The GS 4 features a 5-inch 1080p (1,920 x 1,080) Super AMOLED panel which offers a pixel density of 441 ppi and the ability to use your gloves at the same time. It's also a powerful beast: it packs 2GB RAM and will come with either a 1.6GHz Exynos Octa-core chip or a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm, depending on your region. Refreshingly, it will also come with Android 4.2.2 on-board when it launches.

Dimension-wise, the GS 4 is 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm (5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 inch) and weighs 130g (4.59 ounces). The chassis itself is actually 0.8mm skinnier, 0.7mm thinner and 3g lighter than its predecessor, which is impressive given its larger screen size and 2,600mAh battery. It will launch in black and white hues, though Samsung plans to add more colors to its lineup as the year progresses.

Moving on to the imaging details, the GS 4 sports a 13MP BSI camera with f/2.2 aperture and autofocus, while the front-facing camera gets a slight bump in res to 2MP. Samsung claims that neither camera features any shutter lag, so we'll be eager to test it out. But some of the most intriguing aspects of the camera are the new features: dual-video capture mode, which lets you record video on both cameras simultaneously (much like on the LG Optimus G Pro), and Dual Video Call mode, in which you can make video calls and show the caller what you're looking at. Additionally, Drama Shot utilizes burst mode to create animated GIFs, while Sound & Shot can record up to nine seconds of audio to accompany a still photo.

The GS 4 will also take advantage of the same "Smart" gesture features we saw on the GS 3, and gives you a few more to enjoy. Smart Pause stops the video you're watching if your eyes drift away. Smart Scroll will move the screen up or down when you tilt the phone and look at the screen at the same time. Air View lets you use your finger as an S Pen by giving you a preview of an email, calendar appointment, image gallery or video just by hovering your finger over it. There's also a Group Play feature that connects networks of GS 4 devices (provided they're in close proximity) to share music in a surround-sound mode or play games against each other.

No pricing has been set, and we've been told that the phone will be released globally starting at the end of April.

BlackBerry Says Customer Has Ordered 1 Million Phones

BlackBerry (BBRY), the Canadian smartphone maker that rolled out a new lineup in January, said one of its “established partners” is buying 1 million BlackBerry 10 phones, the biggest order in the company’s history.
“An order for 1 million devices is a tremendous vote of confidence in BlackBerry 10,” Rick Costanzo, executive vice president of global sales for the Waterloo, Ontario-based company, said yesterday in a statement. “Consumers are ready for a new user experience, and BlackBerry 10 delivers. With strong partner support, coupled with this truly re-invented new platform, we have a powerful recipe for success.”
Krista Seggewiss, a spokeswoman for BlackBerry (BBRY), declined to say who the buyer was or define what the company meant by an “established partner.” BlackBerry works with corporate customers and government agencies, as well as all of the largest carriers in the U.S., its biggest single market.
BlackBerry, formerly known as Research In Motion Ltd. (BB), unveiled the BB10 lineup in January. The new phones, which run a redesigned operating system, are the linchpin of its comeback strategy. After pioneering the smartphone market, the company’s global share slipped to single digits in recent years amid competition from Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Google Inc.’s Android.

Barcelona knocked off top spot in World Club Ranking

Barcelona have been knocked off the top of the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) Club World Ranking after a poor run of results. But to many people's surprise it isn't Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, or even Manchester United who have displaced them.
No, the current table toppers in the IFFHS Club World Ranking are Chelsea. That's right, that Stamford Bridge club that seemingly stumbles from crisis to crisis like a drunk from bar to bar - the club whose manager last week went into meltdown, whose owner is reportedly a crazed megalomanic, and whose players include the £50m striker who doesn't score goals and the club legend who can't earn himself a new deal.
The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League, and face a scrap to qualify for next year's Champions League - a competition they've already exited. A section of the fans are in open revolt at the manager when really the blame should be pointed at the board and/or owner. And the club's favourite son, Frank Lampard, looks set to leave the club on a free transfer, probably a week or two after becoming Chelsea's all-time top scorer. Strange times at Stamford Bridge, but then again, that's nothing new.
So, here is the IFFHS top ten...
IFFHS Club World Ranking - Top 10
1. Chelsea | England | 307 points
2. Atletico Madrid | Spain | 304
3. Bayern Munich | Germany | 292
4. Corinthians | Brazil | 287
5. Barcelona | Spain | 283
6. Boca Juniors | Argentina | 281
7. Real Madrid | Spain | 277
8. Juventus |Italy | 241
9. Inter Milan | Italy | 234
10. Sao Paulo | Brazil | 230

UEFA backs Old Trafford referee

UEFA has defended referee Cuneyt Cakir after the Turkish official faced heavy criticism for sending off Nani during Manchester United's Champions League defeat to Real MadridEuropean football's governing body said it had "no problem" with Cakir and stressed that he would remain on its list of Champions League officials.
A spokesman said: "There are no issues for us regarding the sending off, and we will wait for the official reports of the match delegate and the referee's observer, as is procedure. "If they raise concerns, then we will act - but he remains on our list of officials."
Nani was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa with United 1-0 up shortly before the hour mark. Goals from Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo then turned matters in the Spanish club's favour, and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was said to have been "distraught" about the dismissal of his Portuguese winger.
Cakir, 36, is reported to have received death threats from United supporters in the hours after the final whistle. UEFA said Nani would receive an automatic one-match European suspension, with United able to appeal after the disciplinary panel - which could increase that ban - has discussed the issue.
Meanwhile, police in Nottinghamshire have warned people not to waste their time after a United fan called 999 to vent his disgust at Nani's red card. The 18-year-old fan later apologised for his actions, but the county's control room chief inspector Ted Antill said in a statement released by the force: "While this recent example may be amusing, it illustrates the sort of insincere calls we have to deal with on a daily basis in the control room. "They waste our time and they direct us away from genuine victims of crime, particularly if we dispatch officers out to something that turns out to be a bogus report."

Missing toddlers found dead after 39 days

Two  toddlers in Ketu, Lagos State, who were declared missing on January 25, 2013 have been found dead in an abandoned vehicle on the premises of a building next to theirs on Taike Street. The family as well as the police had  suspected that  they were  kidnapped before the  discovery of their remains on Monday.
We learnt that the vehicle in which the children were found was a  Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle, which was used as collateral. According to a police theory, the children went into the vehicle but were trapped inside, causing them to suffocate.
The Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, said the corpses were discovered by bank officials, who had gone to redeem the vehicle. She said, “On Monday, at about 4:30pm, one Phillip Odi in company  with  Julius Odetola, both of whom are employees of Berachah Microfinance Bank, reported that on the same day, they received a text message from Macdonabi Jones Enterprise Limited, a customer of the bank, who pledged his Honda Pilot as collateral.
The bank employees said on reaching the house located at 20 Taike Street, where the vehicle was parked, they discovered the corpses of the two children. The tragic news, however, did not go down well with residents of the street as they alleged foul play. The occupants of the house where the corpses were found had fled for fear of being attacked.
